Diagnosed with HPV yesterday.....Where do I go from here?

Posted in Group:

Since the phone call from my doctor yesterday my emotions have gone from scared out of my mind.....to crying my eyes out...to being mad at the world. I'm a middle aged female that lived in a bad marriague for 20+ years (my ex was unfaithful on several occasions and he had hpv). During the marrigage I went to my doctor regularly to make sure that I did not contract the disease. After being divorced for several years I fell in love with the man of my dreams. He was divorced and had been in a bad marriage as well. We took the necessary precautions and were tested to make sure we didn't have any std's from our unfaithful ex's before getting involved physically. I recently went for my annual check up / pap smear. My doctor called yesterday to tell me that my pap smear was abnormal with atypical cells and I tested positive for HPV. I am scheduled for a Colposcopy. I feel numb......where does life go from here?

Hello there,

Know that you are not alone. You need to remember this stat....about 80% of people encounter HPV in one point of their lives!!! You or your previous partner could have had it for a long time because it can lie dormant in the body if you contracted it & your immune system has it under control. My suggestion is that you do you best to build up your immune system. Overall many cases of HPV get under control within 2-3 years (meaning your pap can come back normal).

Also remember men do not get tested for HPV so it could have been passed along without the men knowing they had it. Be strong! I know it is not easy but we all here to support you.

Big hugs
Tina
